Gallery Intent and Usage
Galleries are used to share imagery and videos and are designed to hold multiple files and provide simple, intuitive access to them for the user. With a high number of items that can be contained, these provide significant capacity to content managers who wish to enhance their text content with imagery.
They also support the use of captions or other contextual information and the user ability to download image files according to permissions associated with media.
Gallery Design Guidelines
- Galleries are designed to showcase a single image or media asset at a time, while granting access to the others via thumbnails below the featured item.
- Galleries use defined aspect ratios, and will display a dark gray background on any unused space in the container.
Gallery Editorial Guidelines
- Use high-quality media when placing galleries on your pages.
- Ensure there are alt tags and meta data defined on each item for accessibility purposes.
- Use captions to identify animal/plant/other in photo, with additional information as needed.
Gallery Types
Default Gallery
On most pages the default gallery is the format that should be used.

Grid Gallery
Grid galleries can be used to provide a visual break in text on select pages. Avoid using more than two rows of photos if using a grid gallery.
Grid galleries are the automatic format for field guide, habitat, conservation area, and natural area pages.
