CWD Management Permit Program

Body

In designated Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Core Areas (areas within approximately 2 miles of where CWD has been found), landowners of at least 5 contiguous acres are eligible to receive up to 10 no-cost CWD Management Permits for use during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons (Sept. 15 to Jan. 15) on their qualifying properties. Landowners may designate all or a portion of CWD Management Permits to other hunters.

CWD Management Permits allow eligible landowners and their designees to take an active role in managing CWD by providing additional opportunities to remove deer from areas where the disease has been detected. The permits also increase surveillance in CWD Core Areas by increasing the number of deer tested.

Qualifying landowners in CWD Core Areas will receive a letter from MDC prior to the start of deer hunting season describing the application process. To obtain permits, landowners must provide information for each hunter (name, date of birth, and conservation ID). Permits are only valid on the property specified by the landowner ID in the eligibility letter provided by MDC. In addition to the CWD Management Permit(s), hunters must have a valid hunting permit for the season they are hunting and must use the methods authorized for that season.

Body

No. CWD Management Permits are valid only during deer season (Sept. 15 to Jan. 15). Hunters must use the methods authorized for the season and follow deer season regulations for hunting. Targeted removal occurs after deer season closes (Jan. 16 to Mar. 15) and requires a separate authorization from MDC to take deer outside of deer season.
