Conservation Teens

An atlatl is a hunting tool created more than 20,000 years ago. It was often used to hunt megafauna such as wooly mammoth. Join us as we explore the history of the atlatl and how it is used today. Create you very own atlatl to take home, learn the technique for using it, and give it a try at Runge. Registration required. Ages 13-17

Conservation Kids

You are invited to our annual stream team clean-up at Runge on our section of Wears Creek. Let’s wade in the water, pick up trash, and explore the life that calls our creek home. Don’t forget to wear old clothes and shoes to get wet and muddy. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Registration required. Ages 7-12

Birds

Do you love biking… and birding? Then this program is for you. Join us as we go for a leisurely ride to look for birds on Mokane Road in Callaway County, just north of Jefferson City. Mokane Road is one of the top birding hotspots in Central Missouri. This program is for birders of all experience levels. We will meet at Carl R Noren Access before carpooling to our starting point. Binoculars, bikes, and helmets will be provided for all that need them. Make sure to bring a water bottle.

Nature Art

Nature's Needlers, a program combining nature with quilting, is back! This monthly series features a nature presentation along with a customized quilt block pattern to take home and complete at your own pace. The 2024 theme is "Missouri's Conservation Success Stories."

The Niangua Darter is a species of freshwater fish endemic to the Osage River Basin of central Missouri. Come and learn how MDC continues to manage and grow the population of this unique species. This will be the 6th quilt block in the series. Registration required. Ages 18+

Hunter Education Skills Session

Have you always wanted to firearm hunt on your own? First you need to get certified! Join us at Runge for a Hunter Education skills session. Participants must be 11 years old and have completed the knowledge portion of the course prior to attending this skills session. This is done either by completing the online version (for a fee) or filling out the student manual chapter review questions and bringing the booklet to class for instructor review (no charge). Student manuals are available at Runge Nature Center or from the MDC website.

Special Event

Agents of Discovery is a mobile app game that takes your visit to Runge to another dimension! As an Agent, your mission is a scavenger hunt played on your phone to discover different things animals do in spring. Explore the exhibits in the nature center to find QR codes with info and questions about animals. Find all the QR codes in the scavenger hunt and answer all questions to win. Then come to the front desk to claim your prize! No registration required. All ages
