Shaw Bottomland Forest

Points of Interest:

  • See what the Meramec River floodplain might have looked like to early explorers.
  • Walk among giant bottomland forest trees.
  • Look for a number of bottomland forest and riparian area bird species.

Natural Features Description:

In the early 19th century much of the floodplain of the middle and lower Meramec River was blanketed in forests like these. Today much of this highly fertile land has been cleared for agricultural purposes.

Engelmann Woods

Points of Interest:

  • Take a walk through a rare remnant of old-growth Missouri River hills forest.
  • Marvel at outstanding spring wildflower and fall color displays.
  • Enjoy seeing migrating spring warblers and year-round populations of a variety of woodpeckers.

Natural History:

Mature and old-growth dry-mesic and mesic upland forests dominated by northern red and white oaks, white ash, shagbark, mockernut, and bitternut hickories; and sugar maple. Some of the larger trees are three feet in diameter and 100 feet tall.

Trout may be taken by pole and line using all types of lures and baits allowed by state regulations, except during the dates listed below.
 

November 1 - January 31:
Catch-and-release only for trout.
Flies, artificial lures, and unscented soft plastic baits only.
Only 1 pole may be used.
Use of chum is prohibited.

February 1 - October 31: You must stop fishing for all species after having 4 trout in possession.

Fishing is permitted year-round during normal park or area hours. Unless indicated in the area rules, trout may be taken by pole and line using all types of lures and baits under statewide limits. A trout permit is required to keep trout.

From the Council Bluff Lake Dam to the Meramec River: 

Daily and possession limit: 12 black bass including no more than 6 largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, combined total of both species, may include only 1 smallmouth bass

Size limit: Smallmouth bass: minimum 15 inches
