MDC hosting pond management workshops in Mid-Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Do you have questions about building a new pond or about management of an existing pond on your property? The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting pond management workshops in four Mid-Missouri counties. Each workshop will cover a wide variety of topics including pond site selection, pond construction, pond stocking, fisheries management, aquatic vegetation management, pond watershed management, and nuisance wildlife.

The FREE workshops will be held in the following counties:

Saline County — Tuesday, March 3, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Charles L. Bacon room, located in the Malcolm Center on the Missouri Valley College campus, 1488 S. Conway in Marshall. Space is limited and registration is required by March 2. To register, contact the Saline County USDA Service Center at 660-886-7447, ext. 301.

Montgomery County — Thursday, March 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Big Spring Fire Department, 758 S. Hwy 19 in Big Spring. Space is limited and registration is required by March 2. To register, contact the Montgomery County USDA Service Center at 573-564-3715, ext. 3.

Moniteau County — Tuesday, March 17, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the California City Hall public meeting room, 500 S. Oak St. in California. Space is limited and registration is required by March 13. To register, contact MDC Fisheries Management Biologist Scott Williams at 573-796-0286, ext. 4284.

Cooper County — Thursday, March 19, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Cooper County Public Health Center, 17040 Klinton Drive in Boonville. Space is limited and registration is required by March 16. To register, contact MDC Fisheries Management Biologist Scott Williams at 573-796-0286, ext. 4284.

"These workshops are great for new or current landowners who would like to learn more about pond management," said MDC Fisheries Management Biologist Scott Voney. "Whether you have a pond or are thinking of building one, the workshop will give you the necessary background and information to assist you with your pond."

Professionals from MDC, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will give presentations during the different workshops and be available to answer questions. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
