Gar are among the largest and most ancient fish to swim Missouri waters but are wildly misunderstood. Join us to learn about these fascinating fish and how they are managed in Missouri. Participants will learn the basics of bowfishing, make lures specific to gar, learn how to clean these armored fish, and taste something that very few anglers know, just how delicious they are!

Blinking and dancing in the evening sky, the magic and beauty of fireflies is breathtaking. Use this evening to learn more about these favorite insects, how you could register your own backyard for Firefly Watch (a fun citizen science program) and make a cool firefly craft. We will then hike into the darkening forest to watch the fireflies appear.

This fishing program will include all the basics of cane pole fishing including proper fish handling. Please meet at Lake 15 at the August A Busch Conservation Area. MANDATORY ORIENTATION: June 4 from 6-8 PM in Swope Park. Logistics of this float, Missouri River navigation and paddle techniques will be covered in this session.
THE FLOAT: There is magic in the night as we experience the lively lights of Kansas City twinkling with the moon and stars on the Missouri River after dark, creating a masterpiece you will not soon forget! We will depart from Platte Landing Park in Parkville and leisurely paddle to the Kaw Point Access in the Fairfax district. Shuttle service will be provided. Presented in cooperation with the Missouri Humanities Council. Registration is not complete unless we receive your $20.00 refundable deposit within one week of registration.
The deposit should be made out to the MISSOURI CONSERVATION HERITAGE FOUNDATION. Please deliver it to the Discovery Center at 4750 Troost, Kansas City, MO 64110. You will receive an e-mail confirming your reservation after we receive your deposit

Lesson 1:June 4
This lesson must be taken before any of the other Discover Nature Fishing lessons 2-4.

This first class includes instruction as well as hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn parts of a fishing pole, how to properly and safely cast a spin-cast fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle, and how to properly handle and release a fish. All fishing gear will be provided by the instructors. Please wear clothing and close-toed shoes suitable for outdoor and water activities. It is recommended that participants bring sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen.
This class is for ages 7 years old and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This first class includes instruction as well as hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. The prairie is home to a wide variety of plants, animals, birds and insects. With that in mind, the Pine Needlers ninth block for a themed quilt now focuses on the meadow lark. A robin-sized bird with a bright yellow breast marked with a black V, this bird is best known for its call. So join the Twin Pines staff and learn more about this favorite prairie resident. Interested in hunting with an atlatl? We will cover atlatl history, the variety of types, and the resources available to purchase or to design your own homemade version. Recreational use and hunting with an atlatl will be discussed, and then you will be given instruction for target shooting.

Class Description:

For women ages 14 and up. Ages 14-17 must be accompanied by an adult. This program offers the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities led by knowledgeable instructors. Learn, improve, or practice outdoor skills in archery, wild edibles, Dutch oven cooking, geocaching, and fishing and enjoy a night hike and naturalist-led hike. In partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Price includes meals, snacks, and lodging. Price per person: $60 members/ $72 nonmembers. Registration required. See Note below.

Note: The Missouri Dept. of Conservation and the Missouri Botanical Garden work together to provide the courses, and the instructors to teach those courses, for this event.
