Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is pleased to feature local artist Radine Bright in our art gallery hall in April of 2026.

"As an artist deeply inspired by the beauty of the natural world, my work focuses on capturing the intricate details and vibrant life of birds and waterfowl through both painting and woodburning. Each piece I create is a reflection of my profound appreciation for nature and the delicate balance that exists within it.

In my paintings, I strive to convey the essence of my subjects, using color and texture to bring their personalities to life. The vibrant plumage of a duck gliding across a serene pond or the graceful flight of a bird against a sunset sky serves as a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us. I am particularly drawn to the unique characteristics of each species, allowing their individual stories to unfold.

Woodburning, or pyrography, is another medium through which I express my love for nature. The warmth of the wood and the precision of the burning process create a tactile experience that complements the organic themes of my work. This technique allows me to explore the textures and patterns found in feathers and foliage, adding depth and dimension to my pieces.

I want my art to inspire others to connect with the environment. I believe that art has the power to evoke emotions and foster a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships within nature. Through my work, I hope to encourage viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the wonders of the avian world. My art is a celebration of life, a tribute to the birds and waterfowl that grace our skies and waters."

Some see Radine's artwork displayed throughout the month of April!

Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is excited to announce the launch of its 2026 Photo Contest, inviting community members of all ages to capture the beauty of Missouri’s native plants, trees, and wildlife. This contest celebrates the diversity of the natural world found anywhere from our own backyard to a local conservation area, and encourages participants to explore, observe, and appreciate the environment around them.

All photos submitted must be taken in or around St. Louis County and should highlight native Missouri species. Participants are asked to follow area regulations, treat nature with care, maintain a respectful distance from wildlife, and avoid harming any plants or habitats while photographing. The contest is open to everyone, and entries will be divided into two categories: Youth (ages 17 and under) and Adult (ages 18 and up). Participants are limited to 1 photo entry.

To enter, please submit your photograph to Lauren Baker at Lauren.Baker@mdc.mo.gov by April 30, 2026. Be sure to indicate which category (youth or adult) you are entering in the email. Beginning May 5, all eligible entries will be on public display in the nature center’s art gallery, where visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite photographs in person.

MDC photographers offer the following tips to help create the best photos:

• Photograph during the early morning, or later into the evening. The light is usually much better during these times than the harsher, midday sun. Soft, cloudy days can also make for some pleasing light.

• Fill the frame with the subject—close-up photos tend to be much more engaging than subjects seen from a distance.

• Consider using a macro or closeup lens. There are amazing details to be discovered in native plants, and a host of tiny and fascinating insects and pollinators.

• Be creative and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Photographers can also consult MDC’s online Field Guide at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/Z9d for more information about native wildlife and their habitats and behaviors.

Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting out, this is a great opportunity to showcase your creativity, explore new trails, and connect with nature.

Shooters move from station to station and shoot at clay targets presented in a dizzying array of angles. It is some of the best practice for shooting at gamebirds. Bring your shotgun and enjoy a sampler of what this game entails. Non-Toxic shot is required. We can provide any gear needed to participate; however, this program is not intended for new shotgun shooters.

Good fishing starts with a good cast. Beginning anglers can find this to be the hardest part!

In this two-hour, hands-on CAST program, young adults will learn how to cast spin-cast, spinning, and baitcasting reels—and why each one feels completely different in your hands.

You’ll practice with standard gear and oversized catfish rods to experience how reel type and rod size change timing, control, and accuracy.

No pressure. No experience required.

Plenty of time to learn, practice, and improve.
