JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) congratulate Tracey Robinson and her PEGS (Program for Exceptionally Gifted Students) class of 14 third, fourth, and fifth graders at Remington Traditional School in Maryland Heights, Shirley Harby and her 12 pre-K and kindergarten class at St. Joseph Catholic School in Martinsburg, and Page Jackson and her 3 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) students at Immanuel Lutheran School in St. Charles on being selected as winners of the 2019 "Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter Free" trashcan-decorating contest.

MDC and MoDOT sponsor the contest as part of Missouri's "No MOre Trash!" campaign to raise awareness and discourage littering. The contest encourages students from kindergarten through eighth grade to join the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trashcan with the "No MOre Trash!" logo and a litter prevention message using a variety of creative mediums.

The winning school from each of three competition grade categories (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8) receives a $200 award. First-place winners are then eligible for a $600 grand prize and trophy. Entries are judged by a group of staff at MDC and MoDOT.

REMINGTON TRADITIONAL SCHOOL WINS 3-5 GRADE CATEGORY AND GRAND PRIZE

Congratulations to teacher Tracey Robinson and her PEGS class of 14 third, fourth, and fifth graders at Remington Traditional School in Maryland Heights on winning the 3-5-grade category and the grand prize for their "Grumpy Cat Says No More Trash and Memes It – Litter-ally" trashcan entry.

According to Robinsons’ entry, “We had a series of design submissions and they evaluated them all and eventually settled on this design. Students designed a trash can after the Facebook-famous Grumpy Cat. They designed this all on their own. After making the trashcan, they also came up with the litter box idea, as well. The PEGS class enjoyed carrying out the litter theme with the project.”

The school will receive a $200 award for the category win and a $600 award for the grand prize win along with a trophy.

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL WINS K-2 GRADE CATEGORY

Congratulations to teacher Shirley Harby and her 12 pre-K and kindergarten students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Martinsburg on winning the K-2-grade category for their trashcan entry, “Who-o-o Can Help? You!”

According to Harby’s entry, “Everyone no matter his or her size can help keep our world clean. Everyone can pick up trash so we have no MOre trash in Missouri! To make the owl, we made "feathers" with handprints. We recycled frisbees for the eyes and a cab light for a beak.”

The school will receive a check for $200 for the category win.

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN SCHOOL WINS 6-8-GRADE CATEGORY

Congratulations to teacher Page Jackson and her 3 STEM students at Immanuel Lutheran School in St. Charles on winning the 6-8-grade category for their entry, “Control Alt Delete Your Trash.”

According to Jackson’s entry, “Tanner, Rocky, and Grant made this can. Their message is Control, Atl, Delete Your Trash." They took a common command for computers and, using recycled computer parts, made their message to others. They would like to see the trash situation under Control. They want people to consider ALT, or alternative, means of disposing of things, like recycling instead of just throwing stuff away, and DELETE for making sure people are properly disposing of items that require it, like construction materials, batteries, and electronics. They used materials they collected from the school trash. They made the "your trash" part of the message out of used chips bags from the lunch room trash cans they collected, cleaned and used. These boys are very proud of the work they put in.”

The school will receive a check for $200 for the category win.
