CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Controlled burning, or prescribed fire, is a useful tool in managing grasslands on CRP, old fields and other lands, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). MDC, Natural resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and the local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) office are sponsoring a prescribed burn workshop and demo burn on April 5 in Cape Girardeau County.
The classroom session will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Ed Graves Farm near Daisy. The workshops will include presentations on fire safety, management techniques and how to conduct a controlled burn.
Weather permitting, a demonstration burn will also be held in the afternoon. Anyone who plans to participate in the burn workshop should wear sturdy work boots and cotton clothing. A light lunch will be provided.
For more information or to register for the workshop, contact the Cape SWCD office at 573-243-1467 ext 117.
For additional information about prescribed fire for land management, contact the MDC Private Land Conservationist at 573-243-1467 x123, or the local SWCD office.
