KIRKWOOD, Mo — The dream of teaching geese to fly takes flight in the Academy Award-nominated film Fly Away Home. The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in Kirkwood is taking the film to the outdoor screen.
As part of its year-long 20th anniversary celebration, Powder Valley will feature a special showing of Fly Away Home, starring Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin, Friday evening, July 15, from 8-10 p.m. The movie will play outside under the stars, accompanied by a soundtrack of crickets and katydids.
The event is free and the whole family is invited. Guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs. Bug spray is also recommended. The Nature Center will provide free popcorn and lemonade. In the event of rain, the showing will be moved indoors to the auditorium.
Fly Away Home tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who finds an orphaned flock of geese and attempts to raise them. She must team up with her estranged father to discover a way to show the birds how to fly south for the winter. The movie won the 1997 Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics Choice Award as Best Family Film.

The Nature Center is located at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood, near the intersection of I-270 and I-44.
The showing of Fly Away Home is part of Powder Valley’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. The Nature Center will continue to feature special events each month this year to commemorate the anniversary. Powder Valley first opened its doors to the public in October 1991.
