MONROE CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Mark Twain Lake Friends of Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Stewardship (FOREST) Council invites students from schools across the state to participate in an archery tournament. The National Archery in the Schools Program tournament will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the new archery range in the Frank Russell Recreation Area at Mark Twain Lake.

The tournament is open to students at any school participating in the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP). Early registration is currently open at, and full registration opens Sept. 10 at 8 a.m. Registration costs $15 per shooter, which includes a tournament T-shirt. All proceeds will go to the Mark Twain Lake FOREST Council for future events and projects around the lake area. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to top individual shooters and teams for Elementary, Middle, and High School divisions.

Other outdoor recreation activities including fishing and 3-D archery are scheduled at the park to run concurrent with the tournament, and a vendor will also serve food onsite.

The new archery range at the Frank Russell Recreation Area features outdoor target distances ranging from 10 to 80 yards, a three-station youth archery range, and a 15-station 3-D archery trail through adjacent woods. The development of the new facility was made possible by an MDC Community Archery Grant, a USACE Handshake Partnership Grant, financial and resource support from the Mark Twain Lake FOREST Council, and volunteer services from neighbors and community members.

MoNASP teaches the basics of archery as part of school curriculum and helps build stronger, more confident and accomplished kids. MoNASP supports international-style target archery in 4th- through 12th-grade physical education classes during the school day. MDC and the Conservation Federation of Missouri offer basic archery instructor training and a $1500 rebate opportunity to help schools purchase equipment and initiate archery activities in school curriculum.
