St. LOUIS, Mo.—There’s a lot to discover beneath the surface of a pond. It’s an intriguing, alien world of fish, insects, and other invertebrate creatures. Exploring pond is an ideal way for kids to discover a hidden aspect of nature. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering two pond exploration experiences for children during the month of August.
The “What’s in a Pond?” free program will be held at the following times and locations:
Each class is open to children age 7-12 and is free of charge; however advanced online registration is required at the links above.
The first portion will be an indoor, classroom-style presentation with educational displays to help prepare participants for what they’ll find outdoors. The second half will take place outside at ponds on each area, creating a hands-on learning experience. Young pond explorers will join MDC naturalist to capture some of the fantastic aquatic critters that live there. MDC will provide all necessary nets, buckets, and other equipment.
Rockwoods Reservation is located at 2751 Glencoe Road, off Highway 109 between I-44 and Highway 100. The August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area is located at 2360 Highway D in St. Charles, about two miles west of Highway 94.
