COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting a workshop for landowners on how to effectively and safely use prescribed fire to boost wildlife habitat and reduce less desirable plant species. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. on March 9 at Bradford Research Center in Columbia. The workshop is free and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required by March 6.
MDC staff will discuss the history of fire on the landscape, benefits from prescribed fire, planning, equipment and how to use resources from MDC and other agencies. Tips on how to organize burn teams and cooperatives will be offered.
“This workshop is great for new or current landowners who would like to learn about using prescribed fire as a tool to improve wildlife habitat on their property,” said MDC Private Land Conservationist John Knudsen. “While uncontrolled wildfires can harm habitat and property, controlled use of prescribed fire can actually improve the health of natural ecosystems.”
The workshop will begin with a classroom session. Weather permitting, a demonstration burn will be held in the afternoon. A lunch will be provided for registered participants.
Bradford Research Center is located seven miles east of Columbia, south of Highway WW on Rangeline Road.
