Kansas City, Mo. – Wild turkey hunters are passionate because the sport connects them with nature as forests and woodlands come alive in spring. They enjoy the excitement of tom turkeys gobbling and the chance to bag a game bird that makes tasty table fare. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering free workshops in the Kansas City area to help hunters new to the sport get started. Experienced hunters can also learn new tactics to increase success.

The Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs will offer an introduction to turkey hunting 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 10. Expert instructors will explore the basics of turkey hunting including locations to hunt, equipment, and strategies. The workshop is for participants age 11 and older. Registration is required. Youths ages 11-15 must be accompanied by an adult participant.

MDC’s Lake City Shooting Range in Jackson County will offer a turkey hunting class 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 29. Instructors will talk about identifying tom and hen turkeys, turkey habits and favored habitats, regulations, safety, hunting strategies, equipment, and proper care of harvested turkeys for cooking. Registration is required and participants must be 12 or older.

An important factor for all turkey hunters is to be familiar with how shotguns and shells perform at various distances. The Lake City Shooting Range will offer a shotgun patterning workshop 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31. A second patterning workshop will be offered 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11. The free workshops are open to participants age 12 and older. Registration is required.
