St. CHARLES, Mo.—Nimble and graceful in flight, the fleet-winged purple martins can provide hours of entertaining viewing as they dart about seeking insects to eat. Males are the most recognizable with their streamlined, purple-blue bodies.
Purple martins, one of our native swallows, will be arriving from South America any day. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) is offering a chance to learn more about these fascinating birds at a free program called It’s Purple Martin Time Saturday, March 3 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area.
The free program is open to ages 12 and up and participation is free. MDC staff will discuss how visitors can create a colony of purple martins in their own backyards. Participants will get to look at the active purple martin house on the Busch Area and discover what components make up a good martin home.
John Miller, a volunteer with the Purple Martin Conservation Association, will be at the event to share his expertise with participants.
