Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free hunter education classroom and skills session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. Participants will earn the certificate needed to obtain permits for hunting in Missouri.

MDC’s hunter education program is divided into two sections, an education portion and then a demonstration of learned skills. This event will provide participants the chance to complete both the knowledge portion in a classroom setting as well as the skills portion. Hunter education teaches and tests participants about safe firearms handling and basic hunting skills and regulations.

This class is for participants age 11 and older. All participants must attend both the morning classroom session and afternoon skills session to receive certification. There will be an hour break for lunch between sessions. Anyone unable to attend the afternoon class must take another skills class to become certified.

COVID-19 precautions will be followed at this event. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zyb.

Hunter education certification can also be obtained online or with a combination of online and in-person methods. A certification course can be completed online by hunters age 16 and older for a paid fee to an online provider. But for hunters age 11 to 15, or those of any age seeking in-person instruction, they must take a free skills class in person. The skills classes are for students age 11 and older. They will need to complete the knowledge portion of the class prior to the skills session. That can be done by filling out the chapter review questions in the student manual, or youths ages 11 to 15 can complete the knowledge portion online for a fee paid to the provider. Printed student manuals are available at MDC offices, or they can be ordered online for free at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/Zox.
