Weston, Mo. – A free workshop devoted to healthy forest and woodland management will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in Weston. Co-hosts for the workshop are the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the National Wild Turkey Federation. The topics will be tailored to forest habitat issues in Platte County.

The county historically held a mix of prairies, forests, and areas with a mix of trees like bur oaks and native grasses and wildflowers. Today, forest still lingers in hilly areas and bur oaks still shade some pasture corners. The steep, loess soil bluffs along the Missouri River are forested and provide key wildlife habitat. That forest is especially important to neotropical migrating birds traveling north to nest or south for the winter.

Biologists and foresters for MDC and the National Wild Turkey Federation will cover a variety of topics such as cost share opportunities for habitat improvement projects, ways to improve deer and turkey habitat, controlling invasive species, forestry tips for urban areas, and partnership opportunities.

Registration is required and is requested by Oct. 6. Participants can register by visiting MDC’s online events page, https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZAw. For more information about the event, call 816-228-3766. The workshop will be held at the West Platte Fire District station, 17870 Missouri 45.

Information about a variety of MDC assistance programs for private landowners is available at https://mdc.mo.gov/property.
