Kansas City, Mo. – Spring brings birds back to backyards, and often some surprising opportunities for people to create food for the table from edibles found in nature. Staff at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center in Kansas City will teach you how at upcoming free programs.
Woodworking skills to build wren houses to attract the tuneful songbirds will be taught in two sessions on Saturday, May 4. The first session is from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and the second session is from 12:30 to 2 p.m. This class is for participants age 10 and older. MDC will provide the materials and staff will help participants built a wren nest box. Tips on wren ecology and where to best place the bird house in a yard will be offered. Dining and learning are on tap for a Wild Edibles, Weeds, Seeds, and More program from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Visitors will sip tea made from wild native plants with the Discovery Center’s spring flora and fauna in the outdoor garden as a backdrop. A sweet wild edible dessert will be served. Various types of edible plants, nuts, flowers, and fruits will be discussed.
