WILLIAMSBURG, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites first-time dove hunters to learn dove hunting basics at a FREE clinic and hunt on opening weekend of the 2019 dove season.

The event, for adults and youth ages 8 – 15, will begin at Prairie Fork Conservation Area with a dove clinic on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. – noon.

Participants will learn the basics of dove biology and management, regulations, safety, ethics, and get hands-on wingshooting experience. Participants who attend the clinic on Saturday will then enjoy a dove hunt on opening morning of dove season, Sunday, Sept. 1. Participants must attend the clinic in order to join the Sunday hunt.

“Dove hunting is fun for all ages and an exciting way to introduce new hunters to the outdoors,” said MDC Wildlife Biologist Ben Diekmann. “Dove hunting is often a treasured tradition amongst friends and family as it signifies the start of fall hunting seasons.”

The Saturday clinic will teach participants to safely enjoy dove hunting and will provide an opportunity to learn about migratory birds and their habitat. Hands-on wingshooting practice will follow a short course on dove biology. Firearms are available if needed, and ammunition will be provided for the wingshooting portion of the Saturday clinic. Participants must bring eye and hearing protection.

All youth must have completed hunter education certification or be accompanied by a licensed adult. Participating adults must have completed hunter education certification and be in possession of the proper hunting permits or have Apprentice Hunter Authorization, proper hunting permits, and be accompanied by a hunter education certified adult.

Participants must preregister by Aug. 28 by contacting Diekmann at (573) 254-3330 or Ben.Diekmann@mdc.mo.gov.
