MDC Northeast Regional Office to host area youth for Conservation Exploration

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Bugs, wildlife, water and fun. They’ve all been part of Scouting’s adventures. The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Northeast Regional Office will host Conservation Exploration, an opportunity for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and members of 4-H to work on outdoor skills and learn about Missouri’s forest, fish and wildlife from 12 to 4 p.m. on April 20.

This year’s activities will include birds, navigation, herpetology, insects, soil and water conservation. Some activities will be set-up at stations indoors, like a self-guided tour on Missouri plants. Other activities will be held outdoors on the Northeast Regional Office grounds, a 26-acre area that includes a half-mile walking trail and a fishing pond stocked with channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill and hybrid sunfish. MDC staff and volunteers will teach and do demonstrations at the stations.

“This is a great opportunity for scouts or kids in 4-H to start or complete a badge or award or project,” said MDC Education Consultant Karen Armstrong. “Participants can move among stations as they choose and at their own pace completing the requirements for their projects.”
