KNOX COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites kids and families to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day, Sept. 24, at Henry Sever Lake Conservation Area near Newark.

Free activities, educational booths, and live demonstrations by MDC staff will take place from 1 – 5 p.m. Fishing poles and bait will be provided, as well as archery and telemetry stations, and interactive presentations on snakes, mammals, and turkeys.

Quail Forever and the National Wild Turkey Foundation will provide door prizes and additional activities.

“This will be a great opportunity to get the family out, enjoy the early-autumn weather, and give kids an opportunity to have fun while learning about Missouri’s outdoors,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver.

Congress created National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1972 to commemorate past, present, and future conservation successes, and to honor those sportsmen and sportswomen who began the modern conservation movement.  National Hunting and Fishing Day is designated as the fourth Saturday in September, and offers a chance for people to come together to celebrate everything they love about hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors.
