SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Girls will have great opportunities to learn a variety of outdoor skills this summer at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Discover Nature Girls Camp. This annual southwest Missouri event, which is for girls ages 11-15, will be Aug. 9-11 at the YMCA’s Camp Wakonda in Lawrence County. This is one of several Discover Nature Girls Camps that MDC holds at select sites around the state.

At this year’s three-day, two-night event; campers will be introduced to outdoor skills in a hands-on, supportive learning environment. Skills covered at this year’s girls camp will be canoeing, orienteering, fish species identification, casting, tying knots, fish cleaning, proper handling and shooting firearms, archery and trail safety. Camp participants will also take part in a hands-on hunter-education course taught by experienced instructors and take a hunter-education test.

The camp is limited to 40 girls and the registration deadline is July 1. Contact MDC’s Southwest Regional Office at 417-895-6880 to request an application form.
