SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – What better way to prepare for winter than by making a bird-feeding cake, also known as a suet cake?
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to Make Your Own Bird Suet, a virtual program planned from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28.
Suet cakes are usually square-shaped blocks made of a mixture of ingredients, primarily suet, or rendered beef fat. Other ingredients might include peanut butter, peanuts, birdseed, and cracked corn.

“Feeding birds can increase your bird identification skills as well as brighten your day,” said MDC Naturalist Wendy Lott. “Join us for this virtual program that will discuss what type of seeds birds prefer to snack on to give them energy in the chilly weather, and how to make and freeze your own homemade suet in preparation for winter feedings.”
