CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting several free programs in the Southeast Region this September. From learning outdoor skills to discovering more about Missouri’s native plants and wildlife, MDC’s Cape Girardeau Nature Center is offering opportunities for people of all ages and experience levels to connect with nature.
Fly Casting 101—Sept. 5
Reel in the excitement of fly fishing with MDC nature center staff. Fly fishing can be one of the most peaceful experiences you have in Missouri; nothing compares to standing in a nice cool stream and listening to the birds and water. Escape the busyness of life with this peaceful activity and learn to cast a fly-fishing rod. From 5:30 – 7 p.m. Sept. 5.

Open Archery for Beginners—Sept. 8
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at archery but haven’t had the chance? Or maybe you tried it at summer camp as a kid but haven’t picked up a bow since. Join MDC staff to learn the basics of shooting a compound bow alongside other beginners. MDC nature center staff will discuss bow mechanics and safety and conclude the program with the opportunity to practice your aim. From 5- 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

Come See Our Gardens—Sept. 16 and Sept. 19
Thinking about planting more native plants, but not sure where to get started? Curious about the flowers on MDC areas? Spend time touring our gardens with an MDC native landscape specialist. Attendees will learn what's currently blooming and what's getting ready to bloom, how to identify plant families, and how to incorporate more native plants in their spaces.
Ages 16 and up are welcome to attend. Registration required.
