WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Whether it’s making nature art or birding, there’s much fun to be had in the Ozark Region with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) throughout the month of September.

Retired service members are invited to take part in Montauk Veterans Free Fishing Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Montauk State Park, 345 County Road 6670 in Salem. Veterans can pick up their free fishing tag the day of the event at the Dorman Steelman Lodge in Montauk State Park. The spring branch will be reserved for veterans and their family members only. Hooked on Vets will help, and there will be attendance prizes. Lunch will be provided. Tagged fish will be stocked with prizes available as well. Ever wanted to learn to shoot effectively when field hunting for game birds? Sign up for Effective Wingshooting – Shoot Flying Targets 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, This basic program includes an introduction to wingshooting fundamentals, distance estimation, and practices shooting lifting, crossing, and multiple targets with a shotgun. Bird lovers are invited to Birding the Ozarks from 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Big Spring National Park, Route 103 in Van Buren. Join MDC as the group observes birds in their fall migration. Don’t wait to sign up for an Invasive Species Workshop with biologists from MDC, Quail Forever and more from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at University of Missouri Extension – Texas County, 114 West Main Street in Houston.
