KANSAS CITY Mo -- Well-honed frontier skills, along with plants, fish and wildlife found along the way, helped the Corps of Discovery complete their epic journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back during 1804 and 1806.
See how the Discovery crew, led by Meriwether Lewis and Willam Clark, accomplished the feat when the Missouri Department of Conservation presents demonstrations and exhibits from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., in Kansas City.
Chemist and historian Roscoe Dickison will talk about medicinal plants utilized by Lewis to treat maladies during the journey. MDC staff will show how dugout canoes were created out of cottonwood logs. Expedition expert Steve Wilson will portray Patrick Gass, a woodworker and one of the crew’s most interesting members. Displays will include furs and hides from wildlife used by the Corps for food and clothing.
“Visitors will be able to understand how the men lived on this journey,” said MDC Education Specialist Brandon Pope.
