KANSAS CITY Mo -- Native wildflowers and grasses are attractive additions to lawn and garden landscaping. They also offer hardiness advantages and many benefit butterflies, birds and other wildlife. A workshop on landscaping with native plants will be offered 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on March 17 at the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. A native plant sale will follow the workshop.
Keynote speaker for the workshop will be MDC Natural History Biologist Larry Rizzo. Rizzo will share insights about how the wild habitat a native plant comes from affects how they will grow in a garden setting. Other topics at the workshop will include rock gardens, pressed-plant art, wild edibles, native trees and shrubs for wildlife, tree diseases and solutions, rain gardens and managing invasive plant species.
The workshop is free but participants are asked to register by calling 816-228-3766.
The public is also invited to attend a native plant sale from 1:15 to 3:45 p.m.
