In-person MDC events and programs at our nature centers, shooting ranges, and other locations around the state are limited due to COVID-19 considerations. MDC is offering new online programs that allow people to attend virtually. Please check our class listings to see what classes are limited, in-person classes or virtual classes.

Are you part of a school, camp, scout, or other community group in the St. Louis Region that would like a presentation about Missouri fish, forest, and wildlife? We have Naturalist staff and volunteers that can come to you with programs, or programs are available at our sites. Programs are offered June through August. Discover Nature Girls’ Camp is a FREE, 1-day camp held by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) for girls ages 11-15 on July 13th. One goal of this camp is to encourage participants to leave with the confidence to explore Missouri’s diverse outdoors on their own. Discover Nature Girls’ Camp will provide them with a supportive learning environment where they can actively participate in “hands-on” outdoor skills led by Conservation Agents and MDC staff. Some of these skills include: archery, shooting sports, fishing, atlatl, and canoeing. At the completion of camp, the girls will become Hunter Education certified so that they may continue using their newly learned skills. Registration is open to the first 60 girls.

This is a multistep process step 1) register online 2) watch for an email and a packet in the mail (PLEASE MAKE SURE TO HAVE A CURRENT EMAIL AND ADDRESS LISTED WHEN REGISTEREING) 3) fill out the packet ASAP and return 4) student must complete the knowledge portion explained in packet and return.

INFORMATION: COVID-19 continues to impact daily operations at all MDC facilities including in-person programs and education classes. Protocols are now in place to provide safety for students and staff including:

• Only pre-registered students and staff are allowed in the classroom

• All staff are required to wear a facemask and practice social distancing

• All students are encouraged to wear a facemask and must practice social distancing

• All students will be asked to use hand sanitizer when arriving and prior to handling firearms

Everyone will be asked self-certification questions related to COVID-19. If you answer yes to any of the following self-certification questions, you should NOT attend.

• Do you, or a person you live with, have:

A temperature of 100.4°F or higher, OR

Two or more of the following: chills, new loss of taste or smell, or unexplained body aches, headache, or sore throat, OR

One or more of the following: dry, non-productive cough (new onset or worsening of chronic cough), shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing?

• If you have traveled outside of Missouri, did you have contact with anyone known to have COVID-19 or visit an area with high incident of COVID-19?

• Have you come into contact with anyone who has been sick?

• In the last two weeks, did you care for or have close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19?

Please self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms before attending the program and stay home if you are exhibiting symptoms.

All in-person classes are subject to cancelation or postponement due to COVID-19. If you decide that you are not going to attend the program, please remove yourself from the registration roster online so others may have the opportunity since space is limited. Join us for Creature Feature Episode Four! This month we will talking about a fuzzy little critter that is considered the king/queen of the pollinators. These buzzy, busy little workers love to collect nectar and pollen from flowers to feed their large families. Can you guess with this creature is? This month, we will watch a short video clip, read a short storybook, and learn a new word associated with that animal. We may even have a special live guest join us!

Please be sure to use a device that can transmit audio as we will play a video with sound during this program.

This program is designed for kids ranging from age 3-7, but all ages are welcome. This program will be held through WebEx. You will receive an email with a WebEx link approximately 24 hours prior to the program, as well as a reminder email before 3 pm on the day of the program. An atlatl is an ancient tool used to throw a light spear known as a dart. Atlatl casting is gaining popularity as a fun target shooting sport. This program will include information about different styles of atlatls and darts as well as accuracy technique.

This program will take place completely outdoors and will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Coronavirus safety protocols will be used. Space is limited to ensure safe social distancing, so sign up early. Instructors will be wearing masks, participants must be free from symptoms of illness, must not have had contact with any person who has symptoms of illness within two weeks, and are strongly encouraged to wear a covering over mouth and nose.

This online virtual program will cover what to do to get started shooting handguns. Orchids are exotic and mysterious, growing only in tropical rain forests. Or maybe not. Missouri is home to 40 species of native orchids. We will explore the unique role these native plants play in our habitats.

Lessons 1 & 2 MUST be taken before any of the other Discover Nature Fishing Lessons.

Lesson 3: Participants will learn about aquatic habitats, food webs, and the basic biology of common Missouri fish species.

Lesson 4: Participants will learn about various fishing lures techniques, as well as identify and understand Missouri fishing regulations.

All fishing gear will be provided by the instructors. Please wear clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor and water conditions. Face masks are required for the entire program. It is recommended that participants bring sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen. This class is for ages 6 and up.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. All persons in your group MUST be individually registered.

Required orientation will be presented at Burr Oak Woods W. Robert Aylward Education Pond. MDC will provide canoes, kayaks, paddles and PFD’s.

Attend the required orientation to learn about Missouri river navigation and to brush up on our canoe strokes before we head out on the river. We will prepare you for your upcoming float.

Participants must attend to orientation to participate in the float on Sunday, May 23 5:30-8:30 AM

FLOAT:

It is magic on the river as the sun peeks over the horizon. We will set out in canoes on a 10-mile float trip on the Missouri River from LaBenite Park to Cooley Lake. Please dress for the weather and bring water and a good flashlight. Bring a simple breakfast to enjoy out on the river.

Lesson 1:

This lesson must be taken before any of the other Discover Nature Fishing lessons 2-4.

This first class includes instruction as well as hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn parts of a fishing pole, how to properly and safely cast a spin-cast fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle, and how to properly handle and release a fish.

Lesson 2:

Participants will learn intermediate fishing techniques and skills as well as hands-on fishing. Participants will be taught how to tie an improved clinch knot and how to properly secure a variety of baits to various types of hooks. All fishing gear will be provided by the instructors. Please wear clothing and close-toed shoes suitable for outdoor and water activities. It is recommended that participants bring sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen.

This class is for children ages 6 years old and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration required (adults) Grab your walking shoes and get a jump on summer with an urban hike through the Columbus Park and River Market neighborhoods. Covering roughly three miles, this moderate to fast paced hike will utilize sidewalks to explore nature in these older neighborhoods. During the hike we will discuss native & invasive plants, wildlife ID, hiking safety and other great urban hikes in KC. The hike will start and end in the River Market. The instructor will e-mail the exact meeting location to participants the week prior to the hike. This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.

Put on your hiking shoes and travel to Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site in Pettis County to join a guided hike on the Radiant Trail and Stonyridge Trail: 3 miles-moderate/difficult. Meet at the Runge Nature Center and follow our hike leaders to the location or meet at the trailhead. Hike leaders will contact participants before the hike to give directions if needed. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and pack a lunch/snack. Masks are required. Registration Required. Ages 18 and up.
