This program will teach the fundamentals of archery and atlatl including equipment, safety, stance, and shooting techniques. This event will take place on the static archery range. All equipment will be provided.

Bring your friends and relive the fun as you learn the basics of shooting a compound bow. There will be plenty of time for shooting and some fun games for those who want to challenge their friends. This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.

Let the adventure begin! Summer is too short to spend it indoors. Join nature center staff for a hands on day camp filled with a sample of awesome outdoor adventure. Hiking, swimming, kayaking and plenty of other activities will make this an experience to remember! All experience levels and abilities welcome. The program will begin at the nature center each morning, but much of our time will be spent at one of several conservation areas. Participants are asked to bring a mask, water bottle, sturdy shoes, and a sack lunch. Snacks, transportation to activities, and all required equipment will be provided. Camp is from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily. Full details will be provided in a welcome packet after registration. Isn’t it time you got out and discovered nature?

(Families) Black bears are an exciting part of Missouri’s natural history, and they’re making a comeback in the state and have been in the news as of late. Find out what MDC is doing to learn more about their life history and manage their status in the state. We’ll discuss the “Bear Necessities” and how to be “Bear Aware” to keep you safe while in the Missouri outdoors, and to keep bears wild.

Program will be held in person at the St. Louis Regional Office classroom.

Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing rod, parts of a fishing rod, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and release a fish. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided.

Ages 7 and above. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Participants do NOT need a fishing permit to fish during this program.

All participants must register separately. Please email the instructor for assistance with registration.

Join us for an early morning 5 mile hike at the Marais Temps Clair (MTC) Conservation Area. Birds are most active in the early morning hours. This a great time of the year for a hike to see what lives in the marsh habitat of MTC. Dress for the weather. Bring water, lunch, binoculars for bird viewing. Participants will meet at Marais Temps Clair Conservation Area Parking Lot on Island Road

Youth .22 Rifle

(Ages 9 and up)

Interested young people may experience shooting .22 rifles by an instructor. Each participant will be learning safety and the proper techniques of shooting .22 rim fire rifles. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment will be provided. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Our big backyard is a six-acre urban oasis for native plants and wildlife. Join the naturalist for a one-hour interpretive walk around our trails. We'll meet many of the wild and native trees, flowers (including prairie blooms) and animals that make a living right here in the middle of Kansas City! This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.
