This program and hunt is for youth, new to duck hunting, that are interested in learning the skills needed to successfully hunt ducks. We will begin with a mandatory class on Wednesday, October 13 from 6-7 p.m. to discuss safety, firearms, clothing, hunting techniques, and details of the hunt. All participants for the hunt must attend the mandatory clinic and be Hunter Education Certified to participate in the hunt on October 24.

Women’s Beginning Handgun

(Ages 16 and up)

The Women's Beginning Handgun program includes handgun fundamentals, operation, safety, maintenance and safe storage. We start in the Education Center with classroom instruction then move to the range for a live-fire session. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment are provided however, you may bring your own handgun and ammunition to the live-fire session. Firearms and ammunition are not allowed in the Education Center

Come celebrate 30 years of conservation in the St. Louis Region at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center on the evening of October 29th! There will be a hayride, a bonfire with s’mores, fall themed crafts, games, and other fun activities to celebrate Powder Valley’s anniversary. Hotdogs, popcorns, s’mores, and drinks will be provided.

Registration is required but individual activities will be first come first serve. The building will be open, but capacity will be limited based on current COVID-19 guidance.

Come learn the basics of Dutch Oven cooking! You will learn about the history of Dutch Oven cooking, and how easy it is to make anything you would cook in your home oven in a Dutch Oven. All participants will have the opportunity to help prepare one of the dishes we will be making and try all the dishes at the end. Part of this program will be outside, so dress according to the weather.

We are strongly encouraging masks when indoors, and outdoors when social distancing is not possible.

This program is for individuals who are 18 years and older. Anyone who will be present must register.

The compass is an excellent tool to help you reach your destination, identify your location, and map your route. Learn how to do all three by joining us at Warrenton Pool Park Pavilion for this free orienteering program. Included will be a treasure hunt for free giveaways. This event will take place outdoors, so be sure to come prepared with proper footwear, clothing attire for gravel trails, and water.

All planning to attend the event should register separately. Children younger than sixteen years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

LIVING WITH WILDLIFE: 101

Friday 5:30pm – 6:30pm

(Adults) Do you enjoy wildlife in your backyard, but struggle with some animals getting a little too close for comfort? Learn some tips and suggestions on how to avoid or stop nuisance wildlife from taking over your home, and about some of the common entry points that they use. This in person program will also cover methods, materials, and gear used in home exclusion. Mount replicas will be on hand to show some of the different types of wildlife that most commonly cause issues.

Enjoy fall colors on the Green Rock Trail! Participants will join Rockwoods Reservation naturalists on a challenging 16 mile hike through Rockwoods Reservation, Greensfelder County Park, and ending in Rockwoods Range. Please bring plenty of snacks and water, and packable lunch. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear for a long hike with a few steep inclines and rocky terrain. This is a no-drop hike (we will not be splitting up at any point), and naturalists will be driving participants back to Rockwoods Reservation at the end. This is a moderate-difficult trail.

Glassberg is a moderate hiking trail with hills that winds through wooded areas and meadows. View the Meramec River Valley and if lucky, a hawk or eagle at the scenic overlook.

Come dressed for the weather. Meet at the Robert & Martha Gaddy Wild Bird Garden in Tower Grove Park. This is located at the Northwest corner of the park, across from the Stone Shelter.

Gather virtually to learn how to hunt, field dress, and cook squirrels. First, we will go over different squirrel hunting techniques and allowed methods, then we will show you how to properly field dress a squirrel, including gutting and skinning. After this, we will talk about the many delicious ways to cook squirrel and be given a few recipes to try out on your own.

Join us for an invigorating mid-November hike of the Turkey Ridge Trail. As we progress along the trail we will talk about the habitat, food, habits and calls of wild turkeys. If we are really lucky, we may even see or hear some wild turkeys. The hike is moderate effort; 2.0 miles with two hills. Participants meet at the Turkey Ridge Trailhead parking lot in the northeast corner of the intersection of Woods Ave and Hwy 109. Experience the sounds of the night during a moderate hike at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area. We will hike the Busch Hiking/Biking Trail which is approximately 3 ½ miles in length. We may hear coyotes howling, and also hear 2 or 3 species of owls calling their mates. Please dress for the weather, bring small flashlight.
