Johnson's Shut-Ins Fens

Points of Interest:

  • This area is in the process of restoration after the 2005 flood from the breach of the AmerenUE Upper Taum Sauk reservoir.
  • Look for dragonflies darting through wetland vegetation.

Natural Features:

This area supported a vibrant fen community prior to the disastrous flood in 2005 when the AmerenUE Upper Taum Sauk reservoir was breached. This area was inundated and large amounts of sediments were deposited on top of the fen. An intensive restoration effort including removing the flood-deposited sediments occurred in the days after the reservoir break flood. Restoration and monitoring efforts are ongoing. It remains to be seen whether this site will recover to its pre-flood diversity.
