Johnson's Shut-Ins Dolomite Glades

Points of Interest:

  • See a glade developed on dolomite, in contrast to the extensive igneous glades in the surrounding Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.
  • Enjoy a season long progression of glade wildflower blooms.

Natural Features:

This glade developed on dolomite of the Davis formation, a Cambrian period rock formed over 500 million years ago. Few dolomite glades such as this occur in the St. Francois Mountains region. It has a set of plant species including gum bumelia, Missouri evening primrose, rose verbena, calamint, and glade heliotrope that are not found on nearby igneous glades.
