About the Area
The Forum Nature Area is one of the many birding hotspots along the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail. If you like birding by bike, or are interested in trying it out, this hotspot provides excellent birding opportunities within Columbia’s city limits. The area has native prairie, wetlands, and riparian woodland. Hinkson Creek forms the southern border of the area. The wetlands and small pond attract a good variety of wading birds, including American Bittern, Green Heron, and Great Blue Heron. Despite its small area, the pond has also brought in Trumpeter Swans, Greater White-fronted Geese, and a variety of dabbling ducks. Like any hotspot along the MKT Trail, the area receives a lot of foot traffic. If you find this disruptive, you might try visiting during the early morning or evening.
In Columbia, take Forum Blvd south until you pass over the MKT Trail. The parking lot will be on your right. It can also be accessed from the MKT Trail itself.
Dining and lodging accommodations can be found in nearby Columbia. While Columbia offers the typical chain restaurants, there are many local favorites as well. For its size, Columbia hosts many art museums and theaters, adding a splash of culture to the area. Residents will also be familiar with the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail, a spur of the larger Katy Trail, which allows foot and bike traffic across the city. Many beautiful parks are scattered throughout the city, which offer birding opportunities in their own right.
