Finger Lakes State Park Birding Trail

About the Area

Finger Lakes State Park is the result of an effort to restore a former coal mine to a natural area. Many lakes are scattered throughout the area, providing residents of central Missouri with great fishing and boating opportunities. A good diversity of waterfowl frequents the area during migration, and the surrounding woods are filled with Woodpecker, Vireo, and Warbler. Hike to a secluded lake and enjoy the sunrise over the water as you wait for Green Heron, Great Egret, and Prothonontary Warbler to reveal themselves. If you have a canoe or kayak, the Finger Lakes is a great place for a float, especially on the lakes that do not have motorboat access. This sense of adventure is further accentuated by the many miles of multi-use hiking trails that wind through the park, many of which are simply rogue trails blazed by years of visitors. The map won’t help you here, just pick a trail and start walking. The Kelley Branch Mountain Bike Trail is a 2.75 mile long trail that meanders through the Kelley Branch Restoration Area. The trail is a loop connecting the northern picnic area to the southern end of the park, crossing Kelley Branch Creek. A key feature of the park is the motorbike and ATV races that take place there each week during the summer, which can impact the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. Therefore, it is best to bird this park during a weekday, when it is much more quiet and peaceful.
