Broemmelsiek Park Birding Trail

About the Area

Broemmelsiek Park is fairly large, at 494 acres, and has a variety of features for busy St. Louis residents looking to spend some quality time outside. The park is most well-known for its dog off-leash area, which even includes a small pond for the dogs to play in. Broemmelsiek was voted the best dog park in the region, and the Paws in the Park event is hosted here each year.

Also unique to the area is a public Astronomy Viewing Area, which allows visitors to stargaze with the local astronomy club every Friday of each month. The bird watching is also excellent at Broemmelsiek, with over nine miles of multiuse trails and paths to hike. Look for hairy woodpeckers in the larger, mature trees, and northern flicker and yellow-bellied sapsucker foraging in the understory. The two large fishing ponds attract a good variety of waterfowl and shorebirds, so it would be worth it to set up your spotting scope along the shoreline to see what you can find. Wild turkey and northern bobwhite may be seen or heard within or nearby the Agricultural Education Garden and the brushy areas surrounding it on the northern tip of the park. The objective of the Agricultural Education Garden is to educate St. Louis youth on the historical farming practices of the St. Charles County region. The garden is filled with native flowers and heirloom vegetables that showcase the types of crops grown by settlers of the region.

These areas have a wonderful diversity of habitats that attract an equally diverse set of species. Busch has one of the largest eBird lists of any hotspot in the state. Weldon Spring also boasts an extensive eBird checklist and is accessible from the Katy Trail. If you are looking for somewhere to eat lunch, there are a couple places in New Melle to the west. St. LAouis, of course, will have many diverse dining and lodging options.
