Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free virtual class Dec. 10 on the biological adaptations that woodpeckers possess to chisel openings in wood. Their tat-a-tat-tat drumming on trees is a sound frequently heard in the woods and in yards as woodpeckers use their beaks to look for insects and create nest cavities.
Missouri has seven species of woodpeckers. Some are year-round residents and others are migrants. Paige Witek, education coordinator for the Missouri River Bird Observatory, will discuss Missouri woodpecker species, their adaptations and their role in forest ecology. She will also talk about how to identify the different species and where to find them.
