Discover nature at Atlanta Conservation Area open house
MACON — Outdoor enthusiasts and kids of all ages are invited to discover nature and explore the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Atlanta Conservation Area (CA) during an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 14. All events are free and no registration is required.
Activities during the open house include trap shooting and an archery station with basic instruction. There will be hour-long, tractor-pulled wagon tours of the area at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. These tours will include a discussion of management practices and habitat at Atlanta CA and hopefully, viewing of some of the wildlife on the area. Plus, participants can enjoy a hike along miles of available roads and access areas.
There is also an unstaffed shooting range available on Atlanta CA that people can use to sight their own guns in preparation for the upcoming fall hunting season.
“There are abundant opportunities available to enjoy and connect with nature at Atlanta CA,” said MDC Wildlife Management Biologist Chad Smith. “This open house provides an opportunity for people both familiar and unfamiliar with the area to come out, meet the MDC personnel that manage it and see all that it has to offer.”
Atlanta CA contains forest, old fields, cropland, grassland and fishable ponds. MDC manages the resources of this 4,809-acre area to provide public recreation and to protect soil and water quality. Management practices include farming, timber harvest and prescribed fire.
“We have miles of trails and roads that meander throughout the area that are great for hiking and wildlife viewing year round,” said Smith. “Additionally, we have a good population of turkey and deer that affords excellent hunting opportunities. This is a perfect outing for anyone looking to learn more about the Atlanta CA and all that it has to offer recreationally.”

The Atlanta CA is located five miles north of Macon on Highway 63, and two miles west on Route AX, then 2.5 miles north on Jupiter Avenue.
