MDC holding Intro to Fly Tying program at Washington County Library in Potosi Aug. 28

POTOSI, Mo.—Most anglers find their bait.  Fly tiers make their own.  By learning what a target fish likes to eat, a skilled fly tier can create a lure that will bring a fish right to the line.

To help anglers get a start in the art and skill of tying effective flies, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding an Intro to Fly Tying program Friday, Aug. 28 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Washington County Library in Potosi.  The class is free and open to anyone age 12 years and up.

“Fly tying is a great way to take your fly fishing to the next level, and what a feeling it is to catch a fish on a fly you tied,” said MDC Conservation Educator Matt  Murray.  “Join us for our intro to fly tying class and try it out yourself.”

Murray said the fly tying can also incorporate hunting into fishing by using the feathers, fur, and hair from the game hunters have already harvested.

This program will provide the basic tools, materials, and skills needed to enable beginners to tie their own flies by the end of the class. All materials used in this will be provided; however, participants are welcome to bring your own tools and equipment to practice on if they already have them.
