Discover Nature - Fishing Lessons 1 & 2

Opportunity to catch and keep fish at Turtle Pond!

This beginning class involves hands-on instruction to teach new anglers basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn parts of a fishing pole, how to properly and safely cast a spin-cast rod and reel, how to recognize and rig basic fishing tackle, and how to properly handle and release a fish.

Participants will also learn intermediate fishing techniques and skills, including how to tie an improved clinch knot and how to properly secure a variety of baits to various types of hooks.

Orienteering and GPS

Join at Pacific Palisades for an advanced orienteering program where you'll have an opportunity to test your compass and map reading skills off trial through dense woods. Prior experience with a compass is recommended. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, uneven terrain, low lying water, and thick brush. Waterproof boots and long pants are strongly recommended.

All planning to attend the event should register separately.

Deer Hunting

Learn 10 basic knots that will help you during your next deer hunt. This class will cover helpful knots that can be used for hauling out a deer after being harvested, getting it loaded into your truck on your own, hanging it up for processing, as well as knots for setting up a homemade deer blind and more!

Hiking

Get to know your local conservation area through a guided hike! Enjoy a scenic hike as we wind along natural leaf-covered trails through oak- hickory forests and learn about plant and wildlife native to the area.

This moderate trek courses along a 5-mile looped trail with an elevation change of 606 feet (recommended for intermediate hikers).

Cooking in Nature

Join us to learn basic outdoor cooking. This event will cover simple fire making methods, cooking utensils, food options and how to cook using a backpacking wood stove. Toward the end of the program, participants will have an opportunity to put into practice what they’ve learned and enjoy some oatmeal and hot chocolate.

Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

Outdoor Skills

The compass is an excellent tool to help you reach your destination, identify your location, and map your route. Learn how to do all three by joining us at for this free orienteering program. Included will be a treasure hunt for free giveaways. This event will take place outdoors, so be sure to come prepared with proper footwear, clothing attire for gravel trails, and water.

Wild Edibles

Come join us for a relaxing 1.3-mile hike along the loop trail at Meramec Conservation Area and learn about the different wild edibles plants we find along the way. Please, be sure to dress for the weather and to use appropriate footwear.

Hunter Education Skills Session

This skills session will satisfy part two of Missouri Hunter Education requirements. To obtain hunter education certification you must also attend part one (online program, self-study with student manual provided by MDC, or a classroom session) and bring along your skills session qualifier certificate or a student manual with the review questions completed. Students 15 and under must also bring a copy of their birth certificate or other proof of age. The final exam will be administered at the end of the skills session.

Learn to Fish

Come join us to learn fishing basics and practice fishing at Sunfish Lake!

Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing rod, parts of a fishing rod, basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and release a fish. Fishing equipment and bait will be provided for the hands-on portion of this program; however, participants are welcome to bring their own fishing rods and lures if they would like to.
