Nature Art

Create with the beauty of the season! As summer’s vivid colors gently soften at Burr Oak Woods, we’ve collected a beautiful assortment of dried stems, flowers, leaves, grasses, and other natural treasures. During this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the rich variety of textures and tones to craft your own charming garden tea light—perfect for bringing a warm, seasonal touch to your home or patio.

Wild Edibles

Registration required (ages 12+) We will share in a collection of samples prepared by the Frugal Foraging Folks team using foods and recipes gathered throughout the year and talk about our experiences of foraging for the past year. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

Wild Edibles

Registration required (ages 12+) We will make something useful from foraged foliage such as baskets, bags, sunhats, etc. These can be made for the participants to keep or to give as gifts. The participants are encouraged to gather some of these materials during the growing season and bring them to class. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

Birds

Registration required (ages 8+) Enjoy a leisurely walk around the Discovery Center grounds, observing the birds that use this urban oasis of varied native gardens, trees and landscaped areas. The walk is guided by a Missouri Master Naturalist and Burroughs Audubon member. While geared toward the beginner, birders of all skill levels are welcome. During the walk, bird identification, including old school methods and current apps, will be covered, as well as life history and related citizen science opportunities. We'll meet in the lobby and dress for the weather.

Wild Edibles

Registration required (ages 12+) We will meet at the Little Blue Trace Trail - Ripley Junction parking lot and forage for whatever is ready to harvest that we have positively identified as safe and useful. We will each take only a little and only what we will actually use for ourselves. There should be thistles, cattails and leaves to make teas. Thistles and cattails both have fluff which, when added to breads and soups, can help clear blood vessels of plaque. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

Wild Edibles

Registration required (ages 12+) Weather permitting, we will gather a sampling of any fruits and nuts at the Discovery Center, which will only be for personal use. We will then take them inside, talk about what we found and how we can use our harvests. Some recipe can be shared at this time. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.
