Nature Art

Nature’s Needlers is a monthly series pairing professional presentations with take-home quilt block patterns that match the featured topic. The 2026 theme is “Nocturnal Nature”, and September focuses on the American Beaver. Participants must attend to receive the pattern.

Learn to Fish

Drop by anytime between 10 am and 1 pm to try your hand at casting a line and catching a fish. Volunteers and staff will be on hand to help you learn how to put a worm on a hook, cast a fishing rod, and how to remove a fish off a hook to release back into the water. All equipment is provided, but feel free to bring your own. Ages 16 and up must have a valid fishing permit. The program will take place at the Missouri Department of Conservation Commission Headquarters- 2901 W. Truman. Follow the signs off Truman Blvd. to the fishing pond.

Special Event

This event is open to all Cub Scout ranks. Scouts may attend with their pack or individually and families are encouraged to attend.? Cub Scout requirements that can be achieved at this event include:

• Outdoor Adventure – All ranks

• Archery Adventure – Age 7 and up

• Champions for Nature (Conservation) Adventure – All ranks

Learn to Fish

Discover fly fishing! Learn how it differs from conventional fishing, what equipment is needed, and how to cast a fly-fishing rod in this introductory course, while attempting to catch a fish or two! Bring a water bottle, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and dress for the weather. All fishing equipment will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Participants 16 – 64 years old will need a valid State of Missouri Fishing License. This program will take place at Jaycee (County Lake) Park in Jefferson City.

Conservation Kids

Conservation Agents protect Missouri's fish, forests, and wildlife by helping people enjoy the outdoors safely and making sure everyone follows hunting and fishing rules. Their job can be challenging, but they have some amazing helpers… K-9 Agents!

Birds

Cooler temperatures and southward migrations make fall a great time to go birding. Join a Runge naturalist for a leisurely, guided walk suitable for all experience levels and search for the many bird species at Runge. Binoculars and field guides are available for those that need them. Meet outside the nature center’s front doors. This program is all outdoors, so make sure to dress for the weather. Registration preferred.

Citizen Science

Join in a citizen science effort and help tag Monarch butterflies to track their journey south. Tagging consists of placing tiny stickers, provided by MonarchWatch.org, on a captured Monarch's wing. After placing the tag on a monarch wing, it is released unharmed and provides data for science! Drop by anytime between 2 - 4 p.m. to participate in the efforts. This program is all outdoors, so dress for the weather.
