Whether you have a sprawling backyard or just an awkward, forgotten "hell strip" between the sidewalk and the street, fall is nature’s secret weapon for building the wild garden of your dreams!

In this cozy virtual program, we’ll dive into the magic, math, and mystery of transforming lawn into living habitat.

Paddle Sports

Kayak Lake Springfield with us on a summer evening and learn about Missouri's native wetland habitats and wildlife! We will provide the kayaks, paddles, and life jackets, just bring water, snacks, sunscreen and wear weather appropriate clothes.

Meet at the Southwood Canoe Access & Trail of Honor parking lot at 7:00 pm.

Ages 18 and up. This event is FREE, but registration is required.

Learn to Fish

This is part two of Fly-Fishing for Beginners. This class focuses on fishing techniques, how flies mimic insects and their metamorphic stages, ethics, and where to go fishing. Then practice casting with members of the Missouri Trout Fisherman's Association. All equipment provided. A catch-and-release fishing opportunity will be available after attending; details will be shared in class. Ages 16 and up. Registration required.

Insects

Get buggy with us in Downtown Springfield! We'll meet at Park Central Square, pass out bug catching equipment, and wander downtown looking for all kinds of bugs. This is a great opportunity to meet other like-minded people and enjoy an evening stroll.

Little Acorns

American White Pelicans are currently soaring across Missouri during their annual fall migration. With their enormous size, unique pouched bills, and incredible hunting skills, these giant birds are fascinating visitors to our state. Come learn about them through engaging activities and a special craft. Ages 3 to 6. Registration required.

Conservation Kids

Soaring through the skies or swooping in on prey, these birds have amazing adaptations that help them survive. Learn about these hunting birds and what makes them special. Conservation Kids is designed for children ages 7 to 12 and their adult caregivers. Other aged siblings can attend and work together with the family as a group. Ages 7 to 12. Registration required.

Learn to Fish

Members of the Missouri Trout Fisherman's Association will teach you about fly-fishing. This is part one of a two-class series. Learn what fly-fishing is, what fish eat, basic fly-fishing concepts, casting basics, and a few knots to get you going. After the indoor portion, participants will drive to Living Memorial Park to practice casting. This is a two-part series, and you must register for both. The second part of this series will be held on Saturday, October 3. Ages 16 and up. Registration required.

Conservation Adults

Meet at the trailhead at 8 pm to go on a naturalist lead hike to the Boardwalk. Roll out your yoga mat for a stretching session with Mary McDaniel while learning about the nighttime sounds around you. Please bring your own yoga mats. Ages 18 and up. Registration required.

Native Plants

Gardening can be an outlet for the artist as well as an enjoyable hobby. Naturalist Jordi Raos will suggest plant pairings for beautiful natural color palettes in this virtual program. All ages. Registration required. Please include a valid email address when you register so we can send you a virtual program link. This link will be sent the day of the program.
