Game Bird Hunting

Hunting Dog Basics

Do you love hunting and dogs and want to combine your passions out in the field? Are you considering purchasing a hunting dog or have a young dog you’re struggling to train? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes” then this workshop is for you! MDC is partnering with local hunting dog professionals / trainers to teach the basics of hunting dogs.

Topics included:

- Breed selection

- Basic obedience and training

- Flushing Dogs

- Pointing Dogs

- Retriever Dogs

Conservation Adults

Have you ever seen someone rock climbing and thought, "I want to do that, but I don't know where to start" or "How does one go about rock climbing ethically?" If that’s you, join us for Climbing 101! We will have instructor Amanda Layman from the Zenith Climbing Gym and naturalist Adara Smith here to go over the basics of climbing, where to get started, and how to climb outdoors ethically.

Ages 18 and up. This program is free, but registration is required.

Paddle Sports

Kayak Lake Springfield with us on a summer evening and learn about Missouri's native wetland habitats and wildlife! We will provide the kayaks, paddles, and life jackets, just bring water, snacks, sunscreen and wear weather appropriate clothes.

Meet at the Southwood Canoe Access & Trail of Honor parking lot at 7:00 pm.

Ages 18 and up. This event is FREE, but registration is required.

Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring (VWQM)

You must be a registered Stream Team volunteer to receive certification and monitoring equipment after the workshop. Register as a volunteer at https://mdc12.mdc.mo.gov/applications/Streamteam.

This event is the stream-side certification to become a Level 1 water quality monitor with Missouri Stream Team. Step 1 is to complete the online portion by watching the virtual training videos on our YouTube page (~4.5 hours). Hunter Education Skills Session

This skill session will cover part two of the Missouri Hunter Education requirements. To enter the session, you must complete the knowledge portion and provide proof of completion by presenting either a certificate or a completed hunter education student manual the day of the event. All students must provide proof of identification and age. The final exam will be administered at the end of the skills session. Please arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the beginning of the class to complete registration; late arrivals will not be admitted so please arrive early.

Archery

Parents, grandparents, and adult mentors bring your youngster(s) to learn a new skill and spend time practicing. You don’t have to be a hunter to become a skilled archer. No experience is necessary and archery equipment will be provided We will teach and practice the basics and help you perfect your stance to shoot more consistently and accurately.

Conservation Teens

Insects are fascinating and play an important role in healthy ecosystems. Let's study them at the Nature Center by seeing how many species we can find and collecting a few for our upcoming Insect-O-Rama event. Be prepared to explore the gardens and other outdoor areas in search of our six-legged friends. All equipment will be provided. Ages 12 to 17. Registration required.

Our annual celebration of insects and the important role they play in nature returns! Insects fascinate us, surround us, and play a critical role in healthy ecosystems. Join insect specialists and enthusiasts for an evening devoted to discovering insects. Bring the entire family and participate in some creepy-crawly fun. All ages. No registration required.

Little Acorns

Crawl or fly in to learn more about these hard-shelled insects! From ladybugs to Hercules beetles, Missouri is home to an amazing variety of beetles. Ages 3 to 6. Registration required.
