Archery is the skill of using a bow to propel arrows. It can be used in hunting, but is also a competitive sport and recreational activity. Nearly everyone — regardless of age, size, or physical ability — can succeed at archery.

Join us at Camp Hellbender-no newts allowed! This summer camp is designed to let adults feel like a kid again and have some fun in the outdoors, while exploring some of the best conservation areas in the region! At Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center, we will be channeling that classic summer camp experience with:

Archery – Take aim and learn how to shoot your shot with a classic compound bow. Shoot with a twist in a fun target challenge after mastering your archery skills!

Outdoor Cooking - Pull out the chef hat because we are proving you can make fan favorites on a campfire. Cooking over coals is a true throw back to that summer camp feeling.

T-Shirt Printing – Return to summer camp and embrace your inner child by customizing your own t-shirt! We will be using leaves, flower stamps, and other natural materials to create colorful designs with paint. Prepare to get creative and messy!

Please bring your own refillable water bottle and lunch. Make sure to bring sunscreen and bug spray. Closed toe shoes are required. We encourage participants to bring a hat and any other cooling devices (personal fan, cooling towel, etc.) as we will be outside for the majority of this camp.

Please register each participant individually. Meet our team of naturalists in nature center classrooms C & D to begin you camp experience.

This program is part of our ongoing Camp Hellbender Series. We encourage you to participate in as many camp days as you’d like. Registration is required for each individual camp. Campers will receive a special sticker to commemorate each day they participate in throughout the summer, and all campers will be invited back for our Stargazing Sendoff at the end of the summer!

Location: Runge Conservation Nature Center
Unleash your inner marksman at Runge in this beginner-friendly crossbow experience! After learning the basics of safely loading and shooting a crossbow, we will put those techniques to the test at our outdoor range. Meet at the Runge outdoor pavilion before heading to the outdoor range with staff. Dress for the weather in closed-toed shoes. All equipment is provided. There is no seating at the range, so bring a camp chair if necessary.

Are you looking to take up bowhunting this fall but are unsure of where or what to begin with? Join our staff for this new program where we will put you through “Bowhunter Bootcamp”. This is a series of programs spanning three weeks, however, participants are welcome to sign up for any of the offerings that they choose. Topics covered will include basic archery equipment and accessories, ground blind and tree stand safety, scouting, and shooting fundamentals. Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment (bows and arrows) that they plan on hunting with to become more familiar with it.

Are you someone that has never shot a bow and arrow before and you’re not sure how to get started? Or maybe you did when you were young but never pursued the activity any further. Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This course is for those with little or no experience. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended for adults with shoulder or back injuries.

This program will introduce the fundamentals for safely and successfully shooting a compound bow and will include lots of hands-on practice. Let Missouri Department of Conservation be your guide to exploring a new outdoor skill.

Following NASP requirements, all participants must be ages 9 and up. The equipment that is used is designed for ages 9 and up to be able to safely handle, nock and arrow, and shoot the bow. Participants aged 9 - 15 must be accompanied by an adult. No children under the age of 9 will be permitted on the archery range.

This event is for those who want to experience the sport of archery in a structured, supportive environment. All equipment will be provided, please do not bring your own equipment. Close toed shoes are required and dress for the weather as we will be outdoors. *NOTE: Please ensure you register all individuals in your group, including children. Individuals who arrive unregistered will not be able to participate.
