Maple Woods Natural Area

Sunlight filters through the forest canopy at Maple Woods Natural Area in Clay County. Warm sunny days followed by cool nights lead to the formation of rich red and orange pigments in the leaves of sugar maple, sweetgum and oaks. Yellow pigment, present throughout the growing season, becomes visible when the green chlorophyll in leaves breaks down. - Jim Rathert
