Editors’ Note

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are making it increasingly difficult for everyone to distinguish between human-created products — such as photos, text, and illustrations — and those with little to no direct human contribution. In short, the line between what is “real” and what is AI is becoming more blurred. 

We take great pride in bringing nature closer to your home through the printed pages of our magazine, and we do that through showing what is real. None of the content we print in this magazine is AI-generated.

We do accept work from you, our readers, for publication in the Missouri Conservationist. From text to photos, your submissions offer a glimpse into how you see nature from your corner of the Show-Me State. Just as we expect our contributing staff to uphold the highest standards in offering truly real content, we ask the same of you. We must rely on your integrity and trust that what you are submitting is original, untouched by AI. 

We recognize photography is especially affected by AI. This computerized manipulation erodes trust between photographer and viewer and undermines the value of the photo. Photography is more than a technical exercise — it’s a language all its own, imparting feelings without words. If a photo doesn’t make us stand in awe and stir our curiosity, it has failed its ultimate purpose — reaching its viewers.

We believe nature is amazingly beautiful all on its own, no AI required.
