St. Joseph, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer free Discover Nature — Fishing lessons from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 12-13, at Lawson City Lake. This program is open to youths ages 7-15. All equipment and bait are provided, and instructors help anglers try out their new skills by fishing at the lake.
MDC’s Discover Nature — Fishing program is taught in four lessons. Lesson 1 and lesson 2 will be taught on the first day, lessons 3 and 4 on the second day. Instructor Brandon Johnson, MDC community education assistant, will teach about basic skills and gear during the first two lessons. Then anglers will have an hour of fishing time. The final two lessons offer more advanced knowledge about fish ecology, artificial lures, and fishing regulations, followed by another hour of fishing time.
Participants will gain the skills to successfully go fishing on their own. Instruction will be at the Lakeview Event Center at the lake.
