WASHINGTON, Mo.—With leaves off the trees and squirrels especially active gathering nuts this time of year, conditions offer the small game hunter a number of advantages.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding an Intro to Squirrel Hunting with an Air Rifle program Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Caldwell Memorial Wildlife Area near Washington. The class is free and open to anyone ages 9 and up.
Participants will learn the basics of squirrel hunting, then have a chance to practice target shooting with an air rifle. MDC will provide all equipment and ammo for the shooting portion so participants should not bring their own firearms.
Using air rifles and pellets can offer a more cost effective entry into small game hunting than traditional rimfire, long rifles and ammo. Air rifles are also quieter than traditional firearms.
Intro to Squirrel Hunting with an Air Rifle is a free class; however, advanced online registration is required at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/oMT.
To reach Caldwell Memorial Wildlife Area from Washington, take Highway 47 south 1.5 miles, then Bieker Road south two miles.
