Now endangered in Missouri, prairie-chickens breed from March through May. Cocks visit booming grounds (leks), where they dance, call, and fight among themselves. Hens visit the lek and select the most fit mate; mating occurs on the lek during April.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has confirmed Chronic Wasting Disease in 24 Missouri free-ranging deer with 4 in Adair County, 19 in Macon County, and 1 in Cole County. CWD has also been confirmed in 11 captive deer in Macon and Linn counties.
