High Ridge, Mo. — The 2013 spring turkey season runs from April 15 through May 5, with the spring youth turkey season running April 6 and 7. Missouri offers some of the finest turkey hunting in the country. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is offering two workshops in March and April to help hunters get more out of the upcoming spring turkey season. They will include turkey hunting and calling techniques.

The first workshop, Wild Turkey Hunting 101, will be Tuesday, March 19, from 6 to 8:30 pm. This workshop is designed to give a broad overview of turkey hunting. To help better understand wild turkeys, the workshop will address their biology and habitats. Hunting topics covered will include basic techniques and Missouri’s hunting regulations. Appropriate firearms and ammunition will also be discussed. In addition, participants will learn about turkey calling, blinds and set-ups, and use of decoys.

On Wednesday, April 3, from 6 to 8:30 pm, the Henges Range will present Turkey Hunting and Calling. This workshop will cover calling tips and techniques for beginners, as well as advanced instruction. Emphasis will be on practical use in the field, how turkeys communicate, and how to apply calling in real turkey hunting situations. Reservations for both workshops begin March 3.

Both turkey hunting workshops are free and open to participants ages 11 and up. Advance registration is required and can be done by calling the Henges Shooting Range at 636-938-9548.

The Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is located off I-44 at the Antire Road exit in High Ridge.
