Warrensburg, Mo. -- Dereck Bowman and Bailey Mehrhoff, 7th graders at South Harrison R-2 schools in Bethany, were among more than 1,400 students shooting bows and arrows on Saturday at the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program. Anthony Emery, a 5th grade student at Mountain Grove Middle School, also competed.

Students in the MoNASP archery program all shoot the same type bows and arrows at targets and basic skills determine success. The competition is supervised with organization that highlights safety. The competitors shoot in three divisions: elementary, middle school and high school. Team and individual standings are scored and the top shooters and teams can advance to a national tournament. These students did not advance. But they were part of a daylong activity that filled the gym and bleachers at the University of Central Missouri with competitors and onlookers excited about archery.
